Tim Toone is NFL's 'Mr. Irrelevant'

(CANVAS STAFF REPORTS) - Tim Toone, a wide receiver from Weber State, was drafted over the weekend by the Detroit Lions as the 255th overall selection.

That's dead last, earning Weber that undesirable title of "Mr. Irrelevant," reported Yahoo! Sports .

The name means what it says: the last pick in the draft is often irrelevant because he often does not make a team's final roster. But there's hope for Weber: some players with the unpleasant moniker who have proven the name wrong and played in the NFL, reported About.com .

The title does come with some special privileges as Toone will be invited to Irrelevant Week beginning on June 21 in Newport, Calif. The celebration began in 1976 when the last pick of the draft was invited for a week of upside-down celebrating and cheering, according to the website.

Toone , like all 254 NFL draftees before him, will have to prove himself in the coming months if he wants to keep putting on a football helmet.

NFLDraftScout.com rated Weber the 62nd best receiver in this draft class. Representatives from all 32 NFL teams saw Toone demonstrate his abilities when they attended the school's pro day on March 9, according to Yahoo! Sports .

"There are three or four guys that they've looked at all year long (and) they need to get more information," Weber State head coach Ron McBride said at the time, reports Yahoo! Sports. "They don't say much, but I thought Tim Toone tested extremely well."

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound Toone ran a 4.42 40-yard dash, reports Yahoo! Sports . At Weber State he played in 46 games played and tallied 206 catches, 3,602 yards and 29 touchdowns. He's noted for his strong talent as a returner, taking two punts back more than 90 yards for touchdowns in 2009, according to the website.

The NFL instituted the first draft in 1936 . The goal has been to help maintain a good distribution of talent throughout the league. This is done by giving teams with the worst winning records the previous seasons the higher picks in the following draft, according to About.com.
