(CANVAS STAFF REPORTS) - It was the stuff dreams are made of when Phil Mickelson triumphed and won his third green jacket at the Masters in Augusta, Ga. on Sunday. And it was even more special because his wife Amy Mickelson was able to celebrate the victory with him.
As The New York Times reports, it wasn't just the victory itself that was meaningful for the golf champ this time around, it was a win for his brave wife, Amy.
CBS' Jim Nantz, during the broadcast of the event, echoed his "There it is, a win for the ages" remarks for Tiger Woods at the 1997 Masters, said of Mickelson, "That's a win for the family."
According to Yahoo! Sports , after battling breast cancer for the past year, 37-year-old Amy had tears streaming down her face as she greeted her husband at the 18th green.
They shared a long embrace to celebrate his emotional Masters win – the first golf tournament the mom-of-three had been able to attend since being diagnosed 11 months ago, reports the Daily Mail .
Although she was in Augusta all week, she watched most of it on television since she was too weak to walk the course. Their three children, Amanda, nine, Sophia, seven and Evan, six, accompanied their mother to the final hole.
Mickelson wore a pink ribbon for breast cancer awareness in his hat throughout the week.
"I wasn't sure if she was going to be there," the 39-year-old Masters champion told reporters. "In the last year, we've been through a lot and it's been tough."
He admitted that it was an emotional week for him and his wife, "And to cap it off with a victory is something I can't put into words. It's something we'll share for the rest of our lives."
His mother, Mary Mickelson, who has also been fighting breast cancer since last July, also proudly joined them at Augusta National.
As the Daily Mail reports, it was the win the PGA tour needed after Tiger Woods' recent sex scandal shrouded a cloud over the championships.
Not only was it one of the most exciting golf tournaments in the last few years, Mickelson's devotion to his family was quite the opposite of Woods', who returned after a five month absence after news of his multiple affairs broke.
And according to CNN , while Mickelson took two breaks from the PGA Tour in the past year, he and his family were given much support by his fellow golfers during his absence.
Fellow golfer John Daly wore bright pink pants to the 2009 BMW PGA Championship in honor of Mickelson's wife's breast cancer fight.
Mickelson returned to the circuit in September, but because of "a lot of side effects from the medicines" his wife hadn't been able to go on Tour with him this season until the Masters.
"We've had a lot of difficult moments in this last year, and we've been fortunate in that we've had good long-term outlook," he told CNN. "Seeing the way she's tackled this fight and the way she's been through so much medically, I just find her to be a very inspiring individual."
